Yesterday I spent the day in San Antonio, TX with my colleague, Liz Swanson who directs our Recovery Churches Leadership Community. We visited the team at Community Bible Church. It was a great visit with a great church. One of the things that I believe speaks highly of CBC and its leadership (Robert Emmitt - senior pastor) is the way they have developed what I call a "real deal culture." All churches have a culture - CBC's is consistent with who they say they are. How do I know? Liz and I experienced it. Robert told us about his passion for reaching people with the gospel and then reported that through their multi-site strategy they have launched 6 new campuses since September with plans for that number to reach 10 before the end of 2007. He also shared a vision for partnering with educational institutions to provide training for single moms and child care service to enable them to pursue education without breaking the bank on the quality care of their kids and pointed out the window to the piece of property that lots of local real estate people would like to buy but that he is reserving as a place to make the vision a reality. Next up was the story of their ministries of pastoral care that includes restoration and recovery ministries. Through the capable leadership of Marguerite Hudson, over 1000 people are served ... each WEEK. And finally there were the people stories. As Robert gave me the tour of the campus, we met person after person (including Daniel, a part of the custodial team who also leads a ministry at the local bus station) whose lives had been transformed by Christ and whose gifts were being honored and employed in ministry.
