Here if You Need Me – A True Story
By Kate Braestrup
I came across this book while browsing Barnes and Nobles a few weeks ago. This true story is a chapter in Kate Braestrup’s remarkable life. Kate relates the story of losing her husband in a tragic car crash and the path she followed afterward toward a new life for herself and for her children. Already an accomplished author at the time of her husband’s death, Kate decided to pursue the vocation her husband had dreamed of pursuing – a ministry career. Following seminary, Kate answered an unusual calling – that of becoming one of the first chaplains, and a female chaplain at that, for the Maine Warden Service. A difficult and sometimes heartbreaking job, the Maine Warden Service mission is search-and-rescue in the Maine woods.
Kate’s story recounts how she moved through grief, recovery and eventually to restored happiness. Serving as chaplain affords opportunities to minister to families and friends of loved ones lost in the Maine wilderness and also to the men and women who faithfully serve in the Warden Service.
Here if You Need Me is both humorous and sad. I found it to be an encouraging narrative of Kate’s desire to reinvent herself and move closer to God through serving others.
