I just watched a very interesting report on CNN describing the way evangelical churches are dealing with the economic meltdown, Evangelicals Beat Bad Economy. Reporter Susan Candiotti leads off the segment by saying, "Pews are packed at evangelical churches and membership is growing despite an economy on the brink."
Rev A.R. Bernard of Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn and Pastor Terry Smith of Life Christian Church in W. Orange, NJ are featured in the piece. Bernard's encouragement, "You lose your job, you lose your home, you lose your car because it's repossessed, but don't lose your faith". Smith observes that churches like Life Christian are growing because the focus isn't on a denomination, a building or traditions, "because that's not what meets people's needs."
What are you doing at your church to help your people deal with this tough economy? Is your attendance up, even though your offerings may be down?
