The Nines, our first online event is Wednesday starting at 9:09 Central and if this thing works, I think it’s a game changer.
I knew it was a good idea and the participant count was going to be way
crazy. I expect about 12,000 unique users that day.
I know there have been live broadcasts of conferences before. But this isn’t like that. (We did the innovation3 conference like that this year) But in this case, no speakers are “there” other than on the screen. No one has to travel to get to the conference, speakers or participants.
I know that we have seen live broadcasts with chat dialog going before. That gathers folks to listen and watch but the interaction on the chat is really tough to follow via streaming chat.
I know there have been videos on web sites that create conversations. But those are not communal experiences as they usually allow people to watch at their leisure. This is a communal viewing. We are experiencing the content TOGETHER.
The idea of THE NINES is to have good, diverse, short form content, where speakers speak to their passion and strength about what God is teaching them right now.
Combine that with a running color commentary and notes to the side of the speaker.
Add to that a place for participants to interact with one another in two ways:
First through simulcast on various other blogs. We have asked a dozen or so bloggers to host the event on their site so they can make their own comments with their regular readers and followers and hopefully create conversations on their own blog about the conference.
Second through a live twitter stream embedded on the main page. With good use of twitter people can see each other’s faces, hear each other’s thoughts and even direct message each other to carry on private conversations.
If folks want, if something strikes a particular chord for discussion, I could see some participants saying “I want to form a quick tokbox group to discuss what that speaker said”, announce it on twitter and go have that discussion. Sort of like their own breakout during the conference.
Don't misunderstand me. I think people will always want to go connect face-to-face with other friends at conferences. I would hate it if there were only online conferences.
And quite frankly, the technology has to work well that day to handle the crowd and all the interaction.
I have now seen almost all the videos and most are just fantastic
messages from various leaders.
You are going to hear from some folks you have never heard of and get some great inspiration, information, motivation and challenge from them.
And while we expect people to drop in and drop out, my guess is that a lot of folks are going to be mesmerized and stick around most of the whole day.
If you want some behind the scenes views from the "green room" follow me @davetravis or @toddrhoades on twitter.

Hmmm? Leadership?
Just wondering how you reconcile
the use of the word “leader”
with what Jesus said in Mt 23:10.
The word “leader”seems like
a “high place.” Yes?
Jesus always took and recommended
the “low place.” Yes?
Jesus humbled Himself,
made himself of no reputation
and took on the form of a servant.
Php 2:7
Jesus in Mat 23:10 told His disciples “NOT” to call
themselves master/“leaders”
for you have one master/"leader” the Christ.
King James Version -
Neither be ye called masters:
for one is your Master, even Christ.
The Interlinear Bible -
Nor be called leaders,
for one is your leader the Christ.
Phillips Modern English -
you must not let people
call you leaders,
you have only one leader, Christ.
Today's English Version -
nor should you be called leader,
your one and only leader
is the Messiah.
The Amplified-
you must not be called
masters (leaders)
for you have one master (leader)
the Christ.
Jesus told His disciples “not”
to be called "leaders"
and none did.
Ro 1:1 Paul,
a servant of Jesus Christ...
Php 1:1 Paul and Timotheus,
the servants of Jesus Christ...
Col 4:12 Epaphras, who is one of you,
a servant of Christ...
Tit 1:1 Paul, a servant of God...
Jas 1:1 James, a servant of God...
2Pe 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant...
His disciples "all" called themselves "servants,"
none called themselves "leaders." None? None.
None called themselves
"servant-leader." None.
If someone
calls them self a "leader"
or thinks they are a "leader;"
Are they a "disciple of Christ?"
Wondering some more.
Most on the list of people
at this “leadership?” event
are not only considered “ leaders?”
but also have the “Title” “Pastor.”
Where in the Bible does it say “pastor = leader?”
Have you done your own study
on pastors?
I mean in the Bible?
What does the Bible say
about pastors?
Makes an interesting study.
Here’s some questions to ask
as you check out pastors.
In the Bible, How many people...
have the title pastor?
In the Bible, How many people are...
referred to as pastor?
In the Bible, How many people are...
ordained as a pastor?
In the Bible, How many congregations are...
led by a pastor?
Be blessed in your search for truth... Jesus
And other sheep I have,
which are not of this fold:
them also I must bring,
and they shall hear my voice;
and there shall be one fold,
and one shepherd.
John 10:16
One Fold - One Shepherd - One Voice.
If Not Now, When?
Be blessed and be a blessing.
